Omega 3 Fatty Acids: What does it all mean?
Populations with high intakes of omega 3 fatty acids (O3FA's)
polyunsaturated fatty acids (such as the Eskimos) have low rates of heart
disease; this observation has increased interest in the possible benefit of
fish oils. Rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids come from fatty fish, like
salmon, and plant sources such as flaxseed and flaxseed oil, canola oil,
soybean oil, and nuts.
The Science:
There are two main Omega 3 Fatty Acids: EPA and DHA. EPA is
converted into prostaglandins in your body that have an
anti-inflammatory affect. These help lower blood pressure, reduce
elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, prevent atherosclerosis, and
improve conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Side effects are mild but include upset stomach, nausea, and loose bowel
movements.
Tips: to avoid that fishy after taste place your O3FA's in the refrigerator
or freezer.
If you have diabetes, you will need to monitor your blood sugar closely as
O3FA's can lower blood sugar.
If you have bleeding disorder or take blood thinners like Coumadin or
Plavix you may have an increased tendency to bleed.
Stop using O3FA's at least 24 hours prior to surgery or dental procedures
to decrease risk of bleeding.
You can still use O3FA's with these conditions but discuss this with us
before you start taking them.
